New Direction

3 min read
A couple of years ago I went on a photo etching workshop. I particularly wanted to learn how to etch onto silver, and created some cuff bracelets that I'm very proud of. Last year, I tried etching fractal images onto copper sheet and hand coloured them. I was pleased with the result, and sold the one that I submitted to an exhibition.

A lot of people have commented on my fractals when I've shown them locally. One remark from several people was that they liked the images but wished that they were a bit messier, a bit less perfect. So the next logical step was to use the copper plaques as etching plates. After another workshop to learn how to use a printing press, I produced a small series of fractal etchings.

I'm sitting at my dining table with a cup of tea before I go out to work. I have a new job. As well as my old job! Every other Saturday I work in the Created in Yorkshire shop. It's a craft co-operative with a difference - it's in a premier position in a large shopping centre rather than tucked away in a side street. It's bright and lively and friendly and showcases the work of over 30 local craftspeople and artists. Including me! My jewellery is beautifully arranged (not by me!) in a little display cabinet and framed fractal prints are out on the shelves.

It took a bit of a leap of faith for me to do this and a lot of the confidence to put my work out there for people to see and hopefully buy came from all of my friends here at DA.

Love and a very happy Easter to all of you xxx

I'm ashamed I haven't updated in such a long time.  I've been having a good few months, creatively.  Just before Christmas, I had some space at an Affordable Art and Craft event.  I took a selection of fractal prints and jewellery.  I hadn't shown any of my fractals in public before, and I was really gratified at the response.  I sold one to a lovely lady who then contacted me the other week to buy another!

On Wednesday, I'll be showing some more of my fractals at the local bi-monthly Art Walk - I'm sharing the space with a talented photographer, Matthew Heptinstall.  The Art Walk uses venues all over town, and we're at Jordans, a local solicitor that has been supporting the event for the last year or so.  Their boardroom is set up with a professional hanging system and they will exhibit our work for the next couple of months, as well as laying on refreshments for Wednesday evening.  I'm really looking forward to it.

Pecha Kucha

Well!  Next Tuesday evening, I'm taking part in a Pecha Kucha Night at the new Hepworth Gallery in Wakefield.  It's a networking event for artists and people involved in the creative world.  The idea is that 20 presenters show 20 slides, each slide for 20 seconds, so they have a little under 7 minutes.  You can present whatever you want.  I'm giving a presentation about my fractal artwork.  It will be really interesting to see what the reception is like - you all know about how there are sometimes tensions between digital or generative artists and traditional artists.  We shall see!

Choosing the 20 slides was not too hard... working out what I'm going to say is another matter altogether.

Exhibition

I may have an exhibition of my fractal art from May 21st.  It's a joint scheme between local arts organisations and the council, using empty commercial space as temporary exhibition sites.  Could be very exciting!  This is planned as part of the opening celebrations for Wakefield's new Hepworth Gallery which is a stunning building on the riverside.

More soon.
